Troubleshooting

The following errors are common after installing new hardware. Please let me know if you think there are any glaring omissions!

System fails to power up -

  • Check the power cord is firmly plugged in to both the computer case and the power source. Disconnecting and connecting hastily has many a time been the cause of panic after a hardware install. Also check power switches are on.

System powers on with no display -

  • Check the monitor is plugged in and switched on.
  • Some monitors enter low power mode when the power unit is switched off. Switch the monitor off and on again.
  • Check the monitor cable is securely fastened to the video card output.
  • Check the video card is securely seated in it's motherboard slot. AGP graphics cards have a particularly nasty habit of being too big for their slots and occasionally become unseated, causing POST errors. Remove and reinstall the video card, making sure it is securely and firmly seated before re-starting the system.

System issues short beeps and fails to start -

Other remedies -

  • Check all cables have been correctly inserted and keyed properly.
  • Check all cables are firmly seated in their sockets
  • Check cables are functioning correctly and do not need replaced.
  • Check that the Master/Slave settings on drives are correct
  • Check for hardware conflicts - this can happen even after the Operating System has started up. It is one of the most frustrating problems when installing new hardware!
