Unpack the hardware

Be careful when handling hardware cards and disk drives - static can kill them dead, end of story.

Always keep the hardware in the anti-static bag it was packaged in until you are ready to actually install it into your computer. Do not leave the component sitting around near speakers, monitors or other sources of magnetism or static.

See the antistatic precautions I mentioned at the beginning of this article - I know, you read them already!

Carefully remove the hardware to be installed from the packaging.
Wherever possible handle cards by the edges, trying not to touch the chips and board.
Hold hard drives by the bare metal casing, avoiding any contact with the board and chips attached to the case.

Before you install the new hardware, make sure you have read any relevant documentation that came with it.
