Symptoms of a hardware conflict

A hardware conflict will normally become apparent after you have added a new device to your system.

The operating system may freeze up or there will be a performance problem related to the device installed or the device it is conflicting with.

The list below shows a selection of the problems that can occur when your system has a hardware conflict...

  • System locks up frequently
  • Sound card stutters or fails
  • Screen corruption occurs
  • The mouse stops working
  • The modem does not operate correctly
  • Windows starts up in safe mode
  • The operating system resets randomly

You can also identify a hardware conflict by examining the system properties page in control panel.

Open the System Device Manager page (Right click 'My Computer', click 'Properties', click 'Device Manager' tab).

If there is an exclamation mark inside a yellow disk beside any of the devices like this it indicates a problem.
9 times out of 10 it will be a hardware conflict.

Sometimes the conflict will not be obvious and depending on your operating system, it may not cause problems at all.
