| When you
add a hardware device to your computer via the PCI,
AGP
or ISA
port, it normally requires a specific set of resources
such as an area of memory, Hardware Interrupt ID (IRQ)
or a Direct Memory Access channel (DMA)
allocation in order to let the operating system know
it is present and will be communicating through the
requested resources.
Sometimes two devices can request the same specific
resources which can cause the operating system to freeze
or result in poor performance of one or more devices.
A hardware conflict can occur when
you add a new device to your computer, although there
are times when the problem can lie dormant, manifesting
itself several days, weeks or even months after a new
device is added to your system.
