I am running Win98 on a 3yr old (ish) Pentium 2 600Mhz. Loads of hard drive space. Recently windows is crashing regularly, particularly after playing games. I have a reasonable number of downloaded files, including my anti-virus software, that I would rather not lose. A friend reckons I should reinstall windows and partition the hard drive to improve performance. Is this a good idea, and if so, how do I go about it?
Hope someone can advise
Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,
In order to save your files before re-partitioning a hard drive, you must back them up. A CD writer and blank CDs, a zip drive, a network card to allow you to network to a friend's computer and save your files there are all options. However, since your system sounds pretty unstable, I would suggest that you re-install windows before choosing from the above backup methods. Take a copy of internet settings, email contacts and emails, phone numbers, etc. Save them in, say, My Documents. Ensure that you have a reliable Windows 98 startup disk. Copy the file Deltree.exe(I think it is located in C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND)to the startup disk. Boot your computer, using the startup floppy. from the A:\ Prompt, type C: (enter). Type deltree windows. This will get rid of your faulty windows setup. Re-install Windows 98 and then setup your chosen backup method. Once you've backed up your files (including My Documents!) you can reboot, using the Win98 floppy, use FDISK to repartition the disk, format the partitions, and then start reinstalling everything!
Good luck
Tom
